Wiiliam Klein retrospective

Thanks to Minas I was able to catch William Klein giving a guided tour of his work.

"Klein, who has not had any formal photographic training, uses his camera to record action and to capture fleeting life. His exhibition in the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art will consist of stills from New York (1954-55), Tokyo (1961), Moscow (1959-60) and Paris (1957-today), fashion editorials and behind-the-scenes from Vogue, excerpts from the films Broadway by Light, Ralentis, and Contacts, paintings, film posters and his famous painted contact sheets. For the first time, Klein will present a series of previously unpublished photographs from Greece (1957 and 1963), having captured Melina Merkouri in the arms of Sir Peter Ustinov, ancient statues that seem to spring to life and everyday faces of the 50s and the 60s."

John Malkovich at the Thessaloniki film festival.

I had a couple of hours in between lessons and you'll never believe who I bumped into when I decided to take a few photos at the Thessaloniki Film festival John sends his regards, by the way.

Headless angel

Headless angel, originally uploaded by Teacher Dude's BBQ.

You are my angel
Come from way above
To bring me love

Her eyes
She's on the dark side
Neutralize
Every man in sight

To love you, love you, love you ...

You are my angel
Come from way above

To love you, love you, love you ...

A picture I didn't take

A child sick, eyes closed and voice lowered in the outpatients clinic in the central hospital. Around me voice from all over the far near east chat away in tongues and dialects I do not understand,. Mothers and fathers fret, and worry over their kids. An outpouring of love and affection that touches me to the core. In a room with a door that never closes another mother sits and watches her child sleeping. She doesn't move or complain just listlessly turns over from time to time.

Protesters get ready to storm the port in Thessaloniki

Every year people in Greece remember the 1973 student demonstrations in Athens Polytechnic, which lead to the downfall of the junta which had ruled the country since 1967. (for more details click here for more historical background).

This year the demonstration was different in that instead of ending at the American consulate on Tsimiski, the protesters continued until the port where they broke down the entrance gates and bypassed the waiting riot police, luckily without violence. Later members of KKE (Kommounistiko Komma Ellados/Communist party of Greece) wrote anti - NATO slogans on Spanish warships in the harbour.

Blogs as course book supplements

This year I've decided to try something new with the class blogs. I thought that it could be used as a kind of wiki page in order to compliment the course books we're using for the Proficiency course. The basic idea is that either I, or preferably the students, post links to anything we see on the internet that is connected with the subject matter in the unit we're doing.

For example, we happen to be on unit two of the Masterclass Proficiency book (as dull as ditch water, to tell you the truth) and we've covered topics such as Stephen Hawkings, Frankenstein and women in science. In each case we found some links that help students do some extra practice at home, if they wish. So, they are links to a free audio book version of Frankenstein, videos of women scientists presenting their work at TED and the like. The emphasis is on enriching audio/video content of the course as listening skills are woefully neglected in most course books at this level.

In addition I want to include more videos from YouTube and Google Video in the future.

Taking exams

Today my students were taking their interviews. The written paper was yesterday. We just got together and chatted before they went in, the idea being that they have done some kind of warm up in English so they don't have to make the jump from Greek to English in the interview room. Once again we were the only ones there doing this in the school yard. As I told my students, not doing this is like a Olympic sprinter getting ready for the final race by drinking a coffee and having a quick ciggy.

Anyhow, if you want to see a ECPE past exam (including mp3 download of the listening section) click here.

Yesterday's storm

Today's storm, originally uploaded by Teacher Dude's BBQ.

I was in the centre and it was blowing a storm. Winds so strong that rubbish bins bolted into the pavement had been blown over in many cases. I had to brace myself against a lamp post in order to avoiding being blown over when I took this.

ΚΑΛΛΙΟ ΛΟΥΦΑΔΟΡΟΣ ΠΑΡΑ ΣΗΜΑΙΟΦΟΡΟΣ

Roughly translated; Better to be a layabout than the best student in the class (who carries the flag in the school parade).

Over 350 schools throughout Greece were occupied by students for three weeks protesting the present poor conditions and lack of books and teachers. In Thessaloniki they want to end the present practice of "double shifts" in which two schools are housed in the same building, one working in the morning, one in the afternoon.

Venizelos is in the house

Tonight I had a couple of hours off so I decided to visit the Palai de Spor and take a few photos of the political speech by Evangelios Venizelos, a candidate for the leadership of PASOK (Greece's version of the UK's Labour party. Alas, he was a bit late, so I just had the chance to take a few shots of him before going to school.

A picture I didn't take.

At the base of the red column something catches his eye. He nudges it and tentatively lifts up the corpse of a small bird. Red and grey, I think. Turning round he flashes me a smile and holds it up, horrifying the woman passing by with his new trophy. A change I guess from a daily routine of selling trinkets to those of us lucky to be able to pay three Euros for a coffee on the seafront. No fun, however, if you're seven years old.

The picture I didn't take.

I'm not sure how it got there. Neatly stopped inside the fence next to a line of artillery pieces and trucks in khaki, the grey sports car looks insubstantial. Silly, even. The driver shouts explanations and denial into his phone; "The road was slippery. No, I wasn't speeding." The others outside the fence look on impassively. They don't believe him, either. The flapping section of the fence and the crumbled steel barrier tell another story. The base guards haven't turned up yet. I guess repelling intruders, even unintended ones wasn't on today's to do list.

The Hurt

"I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way "

"Death to Oceania"

"Death to Oceania", originally uploaded by Teacher Dude's BBQ.

"It was curious to think that the sky was the same for everybody, in Eurasia or Eastasia as well as here. And the people under the sky were also very much the same—everywhere, all over the world, hundreds or thousands of millions of people just like this, people ignorant of one another's existence, held apart by walls of hatred and lies, and yet almost exactly the same—people who had never learned to think but were storing up in their hearts and bellies and muscles the power that would one day overturn the world." —pg 181

The picture I didn't take

I wait for the bus on Lagadas, junkies hanging around, eyes flicking back and forth, hounding a guy who has his arm outstretched. Blood and wounds, probably from a razor. He dips down and places a empty ball point in his socks. The others gather around, shouting something I don't understand. Somebody brings a out a small bottle. Iodine, think and dabs the wound. They continue to shout, drawing stares and tuts from people at the bus stop. They know exactly what they are. I have my camera with me but I don't take it out. The tall one nervously clicking his Stanley knife puts me off, "You know I'm sick." he shouts, as he lifts up his hands in a gesture that is both apology and excuse. Besides the bus has come.

Pendulum - Hold Your Colours

You in four

Thanks to Cool Cat Teacher and the Flat Class Project I had the chance to come across a wonderful video on how to make your presentations stand out by Dean Shareski. The beauty of this is that it practices what it preaches by incorporating the advice given on originality, simplicity etc. . I have already used it once with one of my private students in order to get her started on her project (I'll link to it later when it's completed).

However, Dean mentioned an idea that the University of Chicago School of Business has introduced recently into its admission procedure. Basically, students have to submit,

"four slides or less, please provide readers with content that captures who you are."

I thought that this would be an excellent project for students wishing to start off their blogs. The university suggests Powerpoint or something similar. I would also recommend Comeeko.com which is a site that allows you to make comic strips using your own photos/images.

Καταληψη/ student sit-in

Over 350 schools throughout Greece have been occupied by students protesting the present poor conditions and lack of books and teachers. In Thessaloniki they want to end the present practice of "double shifts" in which two schools are housed in the same buildling, one working in the morning, one in the afternoon.
