Ano Poli








When I have time and I'm not rushing by bike from one lesson to another I like to walk to the centre. This means going through Ano Poli (The Upper City) which most English - speakers refer to as the Old Town, The ironic thing is that most of it is less than 80 years old.

I remember seeing a national Geographic aticle on Thessaloniki from 1916 and noting with surprise that even within the city walls much of the area was empty fields with just the odd house here and there.

Walking through the neighbourhood is a welcome break from the endless apartment blocks that make up most of the city.

Ano Poli is a beautiful place, it takes you away from the grey tall buildings...
