"Bread, freedom, education" - Greece remembers the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising.

After six years of brutal military rule in 1973 Greek university students occupied the Polytechnic campus in central Athens in order to demand a return to democracy. After an initial lull the Junta sent in tanks and police to crush the rebellion, an event that is commemorated very year on the 17th November.

The picture here shows Giorgos Papadopoulos, the head of the junta. From 1967 - 1973 this brutal military dictatorship ruled Greece with an iron fist, some it seems still look back with nostalgia on those days.
