The Greek I Won't Pay movement targets road tolls - Video of latest action

Despite the fact that Greece's economy has been shrinking for nearly six years, unemployment is at record levels and disposable income is dropping, the local and international corporations that control much of the nation's motorway network have repeatedly raise the cost of using these roads.

In an attempt to reverse this groups of Greek activists, part of the Den Plirono movement have resumed their protests at road tolls across the country, encouraging motorists to pass through without paying. This is a risky venture as many have been arrested and several are now facing civil and criminal court cases.

Those charged are facing the possibility of having to pay 500,000 euros each in damages and terms in prison for previous actions.

In Athens, Thessaloniki, patra and many other cities against Greece angry protsters gathered to show their opposition to the latest round of austerity measures and a political system widely reviled for being corrupt and ineffectual.

With demonstrations now entering their third week prime ministerGiorgos Papanderou is fighting a losing battle to push through legislation being demanded by Greece's creditors in return for further loan guarantees. However, resistance to the package of wage cuts, public spending reduction and privatisation has stirred up a popular movement unprecedented in modern greek political history.

Disavowing links with all established political parties Greece's Los Indignados movement has sprung up overnight using Facebook, internet and blogs and been able to bring hundreds of thousands of previously disenchanted Greeks into the political arena, setting off a political crisis the current administration is at a loss to handle.

We Won't Pay - Civil disobedience in Thessaloniki, Greece

Over the last year a group of ordinary Greeks have embarked on a series of acts of civil disobedience by refusing to pay bus fares which have gone up 280% in some cases. Every weekend volunteers board buses and encourage fellow passengers not to buy tickets. Worrried by the movement the government has ordered a police crackdown on such acts, leading to the detention and harassment of activists.
