As a rule of thumb, I avoid political gatherings and demonstrations. Generally, trouble brews around these places. I admire your bravery but from as many of these wacky demonstrations I've heard about, I can understand how the police could panic and fear for their safety. Sometimes these anarchists even throw Molotov cocktails at the police. Although I can't support the police in this instance, I generally support the police over the demonstrators.
Now a personal story. Years ago, I happened to be with a friend of mine who worked at the British Embassy and we were caught in the middle of a demonstration by accident. Luckily, when the police saw my friend's British Embassy ID card, they politely helped us to leave the area very quickly.
