This march in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki was one of many to remember the murder one year ago of rapper KillahP (Pavlos Fyssas) by the supporters of Greece's neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in the city of Patras.

About 3000 took part in an anti-fascism rally in the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki last night. The turnout was boosted by video showing the press spokesman for the neo-Nazi party, Golden Dawn attacking two fellow female MPs during a live TV talk show on Thursday.

The World March which began in New Zealand on October 2, 2009, the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, entered the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki as part of it's 90 day journey that will eventually include all five continents. Thessaloniki, Greece. 29/10/2009.

The march is scheduled to conclude in Punta de Vacas, Aconcagua, Argentina on January 2, 2010.

The event has been organised by “World Without Wars,” - an international organization launched by the Humanist Movement - that has been working for 15 years in the fields of pacifism and non-violence. The aim of the marchers is to oppose violence in all its forms and promote environmental awareness.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek public services closed down and transport was disrupted across the country Thursday as thousands of workers went on strike to protest government spending cuts.

17th November march, Thessaloniki

Despite all the trouble afterwards, yesterday's commemoration of the student uprising on 17th November 1973 (see here about the event)went off without incident. Indeed, it was a good - natured affair and I had the chance to speak to many of my old students that I bumped into as I followed the march's progress. I thought I'd post a few photos and a some video that I took.

I saw several student groups that had volunteered to protect the university's building from possible vandalism by more violent factions. I saw them arguing with a group of masked anarchists who'd been stopped carrying empty retsina bottles (apparently, they make for more reliable Molotov cocktail containers than beer bottles).

Inside the university there was a party atmosphere as students listened to rembetika music and generally celebrated the anniversary of the fall of the junta in a relaxed, laid back manner (see here for other reports).
