The Green Attack exhibition - Steki Metanaston, Thessaloniki

On Saturday I attended the opening of an exhibition of photographs on environmental themes held by Green Attack at the Steki Metanaston in the centre. I submitted a couple of my own pictures so I thought it would be a good idea to go and say hi to the others. Me and Lydia had a great time and enjoyed both the company and the pictures.

The exhibition can be seen at the corner of Venizelou and Ermou in the centre of Thessaloniki and is the first floor. If you have the time take a look. I really love what the different groups have done with the place which used to be an abandoned hotel.

"Στο καταλυτικής επιρροής μυθιστόρημα Ιστορία δύο πόλεων (1859) για τη ζωή στο Παρίσι και το Λονδίνο, ο Άγγλος συγγραφέας Κάρολος Ντίκενς έγραφε «Ήταν η καλύτερη εποχή, ήταν η χειρότερη εποχή, ήταν καιροί σοφίας, ήταν καιροί ανοησίας… είχαμε τα πάντα μπροστά μας, δεν είχαμε τίποτα μπροστά μας», αποτυπώνοντας εύστοχα το πνεύμα της εποχής. Σχεδόν εκατόν πενήντα χρόνια αργότερα, το αίσθημα της αφύπνισης από τον λήθαργο, η αποτυχία της πολιτικής να δώσει λύση στα «μεγάλα» προβλήματα, η πρόσφατη οικονομική κρίση, η επίθεση στο περιβάλλον και το γενικό αίσθημα της ατομικής και συλλογικής αποξένωσης το οποίο η παγκόσμια κοινωνία δεν μπόρεσε να αντιμετωπίσει φαίνονται όλα πολύ απτά. Είμαστε μάρτυρες μιας οικουμενικής απαξίωσης του συστήματος σκέψης, μιας μη αναστρέψιμης ιδεολογικής κατάρρευσης; "

Φωτογράφοι της πόλης της Θεσσαλονίκης, αλλά και από όλη την Ελλάδα, συμμετέχουν στην έκθεση φωτογραφίας που διοργανώνει στο πλαίσιο του 2ου Φεστιβάλ Τάνγκο Θεσσαλονίκης το Φωτογραφικό Κέντρο Θεσσαλονίκης και η Μιλόνγκα Toca Tango.

I had just my finished my shopping when I went into the Grant Bradley gallery for a coffee. Nic was creating a sand painting so I went up and asked if I could take his picture as he worked.

In “The Greek Schools of Istanbul,” published by Agra, Thessaloniki-born photographer Paris Petridis has captured those old schools. The Zappeion, Zografeio and Megali tou Genous schools, and the lesser-known Astiki Vlangas, Galata Primary and Koinotiki Astiki of Halkidona, once part of a thriving Greek world, are now in a state of dignified decline.

They give rise to nostalgic associations of ideas that fan out like an accordion: school photographs, Kemal and Jesus, the crescent and the cross, Greek “Victorian” style, imposing buildings and crisp classicism in the urban fabric of Istanbul. Remnants of a bygone era, the Greek schools remind us how much has changed in the past century."

Junkie Redemption

I'm currently going through all my old pictures with a view to collecting the best ones for an exhibition I want to put on. This means shifting through thousands of photos in order to see if there is anything worth showing others.

I came across this image that I took last year the day after I bought my camera.. It is a guy drugged out of his head sitting on the steps of a church in the centre, I saw him tottering up and down and thought that I had to do something otherwise he'd slip and do some serious harm to himself so I approached him and got him to sit down and drink some water.

Afterwards I asked if I could take his picture.
